The project addresses the concept and phenomenon of paid work. Via multiple case studies, it examines the transformation of work as an occupation, position, and employment. It draws on approaches which connect the practical accomplishment of work with the processes of organization, institutional contexts and socio-material relations. Work is conceived as an area and process of ongoing decision-making, action, reaction, accommodation, or negotiation. It is precisely this interpretative, interactive and relational nature of work which will be juxtaposed with perhaps more abstracted concepts of other relevant theories and research in order to provide fuller and denser clarification. The aim of the project is to compare selected cases with one another and with other texts or findings. At the same time, it also aspires to point out other connections, maybe less noticed, which nevertheless impact work descriptions, performance and identification, as well as coping strategies.
