Slovak EU Presidency in Times of Crisis
Call for papers - Thematic issue of Sociológia / Slovak Sociological Review
Thematic issue editors: Matúš Mišík and Marek Rybář, Comenius University in Bratislava
The Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the second half of 2016 is the first-ever opportunity for Slovakia, after it entered the EU in 2004, to lead the Community. The country has taken the rotating Presidency not only during the peak of the refugee crisis, but also only a couple of days after the British referendum in which voters opted for leaving the EU. Moreover, long-term issues connected to ongoing austerity measures and challenging economic recovery, coupled with efforts to complete the internal market and become a stronger international actor, create an arduous background to the presidency.
The thematic issue aims to analyse the Slovak Presidency in its complexity and therefore targets a wide spectrum of possible contributions. It is interested in papers on the presidency itself, its media coverage, its connection to broader social and economic aspects of Slovak and European society, and the way in which it handles different domestic and international issues including “Brexit” and the refugee crisis. The papers can also analyse the limitations of small EU member states like Slovakia to hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU, or the role which administration and political leadership play within the Presidency. Broader social and political issues connected to multiple EU crises can also be examined. The thematic issue welcomes comparative papers as well as analyses of different strategies and preferences of Slovakia during the Presidency and in the preceding period. Other issues are also welcomed; thematic issue editors encourage interested authors to contact them with topic proposals.
The deadline for abstracts is 30 November 2016. Abstracts of up to 200 words (together with up to 5 keywords) should be sent to matus.misik@uniba.sk and marek.rybar@uniba.sk. Authors will be notified of the selection outcome no later than 20 December 2016. The final papers, written in English, should be 5000–7500 words long (including the abstract, text, appendices, footnotes and references). The deadline for the papers is 31 July 2017. All inquiries should be directed to the thematic issue editors.
